After seeing how much money Bridget spends on keeping up with the latest fashions, Paul tells her to go out and get a job to learn how to be fiscally responsible. Bridget takes drastic measures when an overprotective Paul keeps coming up with excuses to delay her from taking her driver's test. Meanwhile, after convincing a less-than-confident Kerry that she has the talent to enter an art competition, Paul is shocked and Kerry is devastated when her submission is rejected.

A sports-struck Paul lets Bridget do whatever she wants when she starts dating Travis, star basketball player and son of baseball legend Steve Smith. Meanwhile Kerry resents the fact that Paul still thinks of her as a little girl. Bridget is ecstatic when the cheerleading squad has an opening for a new member. But after telling Kerry that she is not cut out to be a cheerleader, Bridget is completely dumbfounded when her sister tries out and is chosen for the team. Meanwhile, Paul tries in vain to wean Rory off video games and introduce him to the world of books.

Paul seems to be the only one looking forward to a family Halloween, as Bridget, Kerry and Rory make plans to spend the spooky evening away from home and with their friends.

But Paul's wish to relive the past by having the family get together for one last Halloween campout in the old treehouse may turn out to be the biggest nightmare of the evening. In an effort to win back the love and respect that his daughters used to show him when they were young, Paul turns to a parenting book for some quick advice.

But when Bridget and Kerry discover Paul's teaching tool, they try to use it to their advantage to get their father to let them go to a rock festival. After Paul convinces Bridget to tell Kyle the truth about her date with another boy, Kyle breaks up with her. Meanwhile, Kerry's first date turns out to be a dream, but she is devastated when the boy doesn't call her back.

When no one can agree on where the family vacation should take place, Paul challenges the Hennessey clan to give up their bad habits for a week and the winner gets to choose the vacation spot. But the family's vices soon get the better of them, and secret collaborations and clandestine alliances threaten to foil the contest. Paul becomes quick friends with his new editor Nick when he discovers they both are married fathers of teenage girls.

But Paul soon learns that they both have the reputation of being an overprotective psycho dad. Meanwhile, Paul wants to make Thanksgiving a family affair, and forbids Bridget and Kerry from inviting their boyfriends. Paul tries to find perfect gifts for the family to make up for last year's Christmas fiasco. Kerry finds a stray dog during the holidays. Cate is overjoyed when she is asked to sing a solo at the church's midnight service, but fears that seeing her family there will make her nervous.

When a proud Paul lets thirteen-year-old Rory go out on his first date, Bridget and Kerry accuse him of unfairly changing the rules because they were never allowed to date at that age. Kerry is shocked when Bridget receives a higher score then she did on a state aptitude test. Paul and Cate are shocked when they are called into the principal's office and informed that Bridget wants to skip her college prep classes in order to become an esthetician.

Meanwhile, Paul is so impressed with Kerry's sketches of The Incredible Boring Woman that he gets the principal to print them in the school newspaper. After Kerry and her boyfriend break up, Paul tries to cheer her up by getting Bridget to take her little sister with her to a party.

Meanwhile, Paul and Cate try to discover what is hidden in Rory's secret box. After discovering that boyfriend Kyle kissed Kerry at a party, Bridget gives her sister the silent treatment which is anything but quiet for Paul.

But real life merges with fantasy when Paul has a dream that lands him in familiar territory, showing Kyle as a swinging bachelor living with Paul's two beautiful daughters in an apartment straight out of the 70s.

Bridget defies the rules of the house after Paul forbids her from going out on a date with Ben, her college-age drum instructor. Meanwhile, Kerry is mad at Cate when her ex-boyfriend confesses that he thinks her mother is pretty. After a party at Tommy's house is broken up by the police, Paul chastises his friend and unwittingly volunteers to host the next one. But when the party gets out of control too, the kids think of him as a cool parent, while the neighborhood parents think he's just as unreliable as Tommy.

When Paul is asked by race car driver Carter Tibbits Jason Priestley, ""Beverly Hills "" to write a book about him, Paul brings the family to Tibbits' mansion to meet the driving legend and his sarcastically dry-witted butler, Cody Robert Guillaume, ""Benson,"" ""Sports Night"" -- who used to be Carter's crew chief.

But a misunderstanding leads Rory to steal a photo from Carter's room, and it's Paul who's under suspicion when a security camera catches him trying to return the item. Kerry devotes her school video project to sister Bridget to illustrate the hypocrisy that life is much easier for the beautiful people.

But when Bridget discovers that the video makes her look shallow, she takes Paul's advice to enrich her life by taking up tennis again. While vacationing in Florida at Cate's parent's home, Paul and Cate catch Bridget and Kerry on the news partying with a group of Spring Breakers.

But the news runs archival footage that features a young Cate letting loose in a bar. Meanwhile, a jealous Paul meets Cate's college boyfriend Byron and Rory befriends an elderly gentleman whose stories about World War II turn out to be more fiction than fact.

Paul's job as parental guardian becomes more of a full-time position when Cate is up for a promotion and has to spend more time at the hospital. After Paul introduces Rory to baseball card collecting, Rory trades the cards for something not exactly associated with the sport. Bridget and Paul are surprised to find themselves in similar situations when they are both alienated in their social circles. But they devise a plan to settle the score, leading Paul to crash a poker game with Tommy to get closer to boss Nick, and Bridget trying to break up ex-boyfriend Kyle and her nemesis Jenna.

For a health class assignment, Bridget and Kyle have to take care of a sack of flour as if it were a baby. Kerry and Rory bake cookies for the Great American Bake Sale to help put an end to childhood hunger in America. After reluctantly inviting socially inept neighbors Fred and Mary Ellen Doyle and their kids over for dinner, Paul and Cate are shocked when the entire Hennessy clan is asked to take part in the Doyles' daughter's wedding.

Meanwhile Kerry neglects to inform Bridget that geeky Donny Doyle has grown up to be a hunk, and Rory takes a part in a play as a cross-dresser in order to meet girls. Having learned that her sister Maggie is having marital problems, Cate is nevertheless not too thrilled when Paul invites Maggie to stay at the house. Meanwhile, Paul and Cate are impressed with how mature Bridget has become after they agreed to let her go out with neighbor Donny Doyle, who is home from the Naval Academy.

Bridget and Kerry wonder if Kyle has ulterior motives when he befriends Rory. The rivalry between Cate and Maggie comes to a boiling point when Maggie gets a sexy, new makeover and gives Bridget a water bra as a gift. Tensions between the Hennessy sisters mount when Kerry and Kyle begin dating, while Bridget's popularity takes a nosedive after she dissed her friends for Donny. Paul becomes concerned when he finds an empty pregnancy test kit. Quotes Cate : [reading Paul's last article] Okay readers, today we're having a little pop quiz, it's multiple choice, so sharpen your number 2 pencils and put your thinking caps on. Crazy credits The opening sequence of the first season featured Kerry, Kate, Bridget and Paul each looking at Bridget's or Kerry's new date one at a time the scene is viewed from the latter's perspective , the camera panning down to the doormat with the show's title, and finally Rory taunting the date.

Rory's taunt changed in every opening sequence although they were often repeated between non-consecutive episodes. User reviews Review. Featured review. Thought it would finish, but now is stronger than ever. I live in the UK and have watched this sitcom in bits and bobs when it has been on The Disney Channel. And I really enjoy it, its a bit like an old-school family sitcom but updated and not afraid to cross a few boundaries. When it first started it had it's full title 8 Simple Rules for dating my teenage daughter.

It all focused around the dad's insecurity about trying to raise his two teenager daughters who were growing daily and how he couldn't connect with them in the way he did with his son. In these first episodes John Ritter's character dominated the show and rightly so but was pumped up so much that Katey Segal, who is one of my favourite actresses, was pushed to the sidelines until they decided to focus on the relationship between husband and wife as well as father and daughters.

After the untimely death of John Ritter I thought this series may have been cancelled but they carried on and I'm glad they did. Now Katey Segal's been given more to do and they've introduced two new characters one played by James Garner and the other by one of my favourite comedy actors David Spade who I'm glad's back on TV now Just Shoot Me's finished. These two new male characters fill the gap in the parental hole for the dad.

Where James Garner's grandad character is the strict oldie who wants to discpline the kids, Spade's character is the chilled out cousin who wants to be down with the kids and tell them how to be cool but also is looking out for them.

These two characters demonstrate both sides of the dad but at the same time are conflicting views on how the mother should raise her children. A great sitcom and long may it continue. bestsitcoms-1 Nov 22, Details Edit. Release date September 17, United States. United States. Official site. A Few Simple Rules. Los Angeles, California, USA. A nationally syndicated columnist with the Rocky Mountain News, Cameron gained national attention with the publication of 8 SIMPLE RULES in hardcover, becoming a regular contributor to Time's "Your Family" column and a featured story on CNN, CBS's The Early Show, and in People magazine. The reason is simple: he expresses something very true in a very funny way, examining just what happens when Daddy's little girl becomes a teenager. Beginning with the warning signs 5: Your car insurance suddenly costs more than the car , the book covers dating Rule 2: Keep your hands and eyes off my daughter's body or I will remove them , the telephone seemingly wired to her nervous system , braces the costliest metal on earth , the first job, and more.

About the Author W. Bruce Cameron makes his home in Santa Monica, CA. A Father's Guide to the Impossible Studies show that the world population of teenagers is on the rise, and I'm convinced that every single one of them comes over to my house after school to eat my food. My wife ignores my instructions and actually spends money trying to satisfy these adolescent appetites, which is a bit like trying to warm a winter day by turning up the heat and opening your windows. Anyway, the world is positively teeming with teenagers, and as long as people continue to think about starting a family, the trend is likely to continue.

This is not my fault. I am only willing to accept the blame for the ones that my wife caused and have taken educational measures with her to make sure it doesn't happen again. But if I am, indeed, surviving the experience, perhaps I can share with you some of the knowledge I have so painfully gained over what has been more than half a decade of tears, hormones, and stress fractures. If you've had a baby, or are engaged in breeding, I will tell you what you have to look forward to.

If it's been about a dozen birthdays since you brought home that darling little bundle of girl baby, I am willing to explain the skills and tactics you will need to make it through the next eight years with a minimum of trauma. Having a child mutate into a teenager is a bit like being an airline passenger who must suddenly takeover for a stricken pilot and land the plane.

And in this case, the passengers are all yelling, "I hate you! I hate you! With a book like this-an "owner's manual," if you will-you may learn enough to make it to the airport safely. Otherwise, you might as well go back and finish watching the movie with everybody else. The Gathering Storm First things first: Let's diagnose the situation.

Just because your blood pressure is so high you swear other people can hear it doesn't mean you're suffering from teenager-your daughter might be a "preteen," which is sort of like having a tornado before a hurricane hits. Here's a checklist that you can use to confirm your worst fears. Warning Signs That You May Be Living with a Teenager - Your phone is always busy, so you put in a second line and it's always busy. If you are experiencing some of the above warning signs, do not panic.

Follow the advice contained in this book and remain focused on your goal, which is to get the teenagers moved out of the house before they breed and the whole cycle begins again. He has somehow managed to crawl into the confused, everything-is-a-crisis minds of teenage girls to help frustrated fathers better understand where they stand in the lives of their estrogen-driven daughters. As a father of three teenage girls myself, I commiserated with his hilarious descriptions of radical mood swings, theatrical expressions, rolling eyes, exaggerated sighs and "that's not my job" attitudes.

The conversations he chronicles with his kids will keep you in stitches. Written for specifically for fathers, I wound up reading many of the passages aloud to my wife and my righteously indignant daughters.

My wife and I laughed so hard tears came to our eyes as we saw our own girls aptly described in this hard to put down book. Eight Simple Rules was so funny, I purchased copies for other DODOs dads of daughters only that I know. This book is a must read for any man who already shares bathroom space with a teenage girl -- or for some poor soul who may someday try to raise one.

One person found this helpful. Having watched the TV show every week with my 13 year old daughter one time a week we are actually entertained together , I had an idea this would be a funny little book.

But I just couldn't stop laughing. My wife would look at me like I was crazy when I read a few passages to her. Made me realize that it's truly for us dads. There is so little in the media that we can identify with as fathers of daughters that this is an oasis of "yes, there are others going through it as well, you're not alone".

It helps you to understand it's nothing really personal, just the normal cycle, the way of the world. This is truly a "User's Manual". Hang onto this book during the storm, then pass it on to the next sailor as he comes up the pike. Oops, gotta go pick up my daughter at the mall now, better run I picked up this gem in a little bookstore at the beach. I didn't plan on buying it until I started laughing so hard it hurt!

I am in the trenches with my very own 14 year-old daughter and Cameron is right on the money. I tried to interest her dad in reading it seeing as he doesn't find this stage particularly humorous. The result has been worth the price of the book a million times over. If you can laugh at this stuff, it makes it all a little better. Besides, what choice do you have? I read a few chapters aloud to my daughter who rolled her eyes, tried to act cool and ended up giggling along with the rest of us.

Dads need to lighten up and Cameron is the perfect one to show the way. I dunno, the other reviewers thought this was a hoot, but I thought the humor was pretty obvious for the most part. Yes, I occasionally laughed aloud, and the very last chapter was particularly good.
